How I
love the inspiration and very dear people I met through Instagram.
One of
them is my dear friend Saskia, (@Sasje___) who could make her dream
trip to the Philipines. I was so touched by her story, that I like to
share it with you.
Which started like a dream...
Saskia
dreamed of volunteering for a long time. But how and when was the
question. Saskia is a coworker at IKEA, and when the IKEA Foundation
searched 6 volunteers among their coworkers who could travel to the
Philipines to visit some projects by Save the Children. A once in a
lifetime change, so Saskia took it! The nice thing about Instagram
is, that people are always willing to help you. I helped her witch
her application and translate it for her and Saskia asked
Theo-Bert (IG @theobert_pot) to create some designs to thank the people there. So great
to find people who are willing to help just to make a dream come
true. Don't say internet is unpersonal!
The
moment Saskia heard, that she was selected, she couldn't be happier.
This would be a great experience!
At May
14th, she flew to Manilla and was warm welcomed there. After a day
with a guided tour through the city centre she visited the Save the
Children headquarters where they were given a presentation on the
Kasali project, part of the inclusive education program. The Kasali
project allows children with disabilities to receive education. What
a fantastic job does Save the Children!
Visits followed: to a
kindergarten and school. They got a boodle flight (feastmeal): a
beautiful long table was covered with banana leaves where they put
the food at. Everybody, young and old, eated standing together
enjoying the delicious food. Food really connects! None of the food
was wasted. The remains of the meal were taken home by the children.
Also
the group watched a Parent Education session. Here, parents learn to
respond positively to a child with a disability. Very important,
because unfortunately discrimination among disabilities is common in
the Philippines. The highlight of the trip to the Philippines for
Saskia were the home visits. In the Philippines, they know ally what
is living small. In tiny cottage sometimes three families lives
together. What really touched Saskia is how close and warm the
families are. Saskia took a bag with clothes for the families she
visited. Later that day, she saw how the children very proudly wear
these clothesand she was really moved. May 20, Saskia traveled back
again, after a week which has flown by.
Save
the Children is doing an incredible job! How is it nice to work for a
company like IKEA. The donation of the IKEA Foundation really makes a
big difference: a better life for children with a cup king and their
parents.
Every
day Saskia thinks of the great children, parents and the amazing
staff of Save the Children in the Philippines. She dreams about going
back ..... And now you know that dreams come true.
Wat
word ik blij van Instagram en de lieve en inspirerende mensen die ik
via Instagram ontmoet. Een van hen is mijn lieve vriendin Saskia
(@Sasje___) die haar droomreis naar de Filipijnen kon maken. Ik was
zo geraakt door haar verhaal, dat ik het graag met jullie wil delen.
Wat
begon als een droom........
Al
langere tijd droomde Saskia ervan om vrijwilligerswerk te doen.
Maar
wat & hoe was de vraag. Tot de oproep van de IKEA foundation
voorbij kwam. 6 IKEA medewerkers kregen de kans om in de Filipijnen
projecten van Save the Children te bezoeken.
Zo'n
kans krijg je maar 1x, dus Saskia pakte dit natuurlijk met beide
handen aan.
Het
leuke van werken aan je droom is dat er nog meer moois op je pad
komt. Ik bood spontaan aan om naar de sollicitatie te kijken & de
spelling te controleren. Saskia zette zich over haar verlegenheid
heen en vroeg Theo-Bert (IG @theobert_pot) om hulp voor bedankjes. Zo
fijn dat deze 2 mensen zich belangeloos voor deze reis inzette! Wie
zegt dat internet onpersoonlijk is?
Het
moment dat Saskia te horen kreeg dat ze 1 van de collega's was die
mee mocht sprong ik een gat in de lucht. Wat een geweldige ervaring
ging dit worden. Nog niet wetende dat geweldig, zwak is uitgedrukt...
14 mei was het zover: ze vlogen naar Manilla. Na een 16 uur durende
vlucht krijgen ze - letterlijk en figuurlijk - een warm welkom in
Manilla. De eerste dag kreeg de groep een rondleiding door Manilla en
toen was het tijd om het hoofdkantoor van Save the Children te
bezoeken waar ze een presentatie kregen over het Kasali-project, een
onderdeel van het inclusive education programma. Het Kasali project
maakt het mogelijk dat kinderen met een beperking onderwijs krijgen.
Wat een fantastisch werk doet Save the Children! Bezoeken aan een
crèche en school volgen. Ze krijgen een boodle flight (feestmaal):
een prachtige lange tafel is bekleed met bananenbladeren waar eten op
ligt. Met jong & oud eten ze gezamenlijk van het heerlijke eten.
Eten verbind letterlijk! Niets van het eten gaat verloren. De
restanten worden door de kinderen mee naar huis genomen.
Ook
wordt er meegekeken met een parent education session. Hier leren
ouders positief te reageren op een kind met een beperking. Heel
belangrijk, want helaas komt discriminatie van kinderen met een
beperking vaak voor in de Filipijnen. Het hoogtepunt van de reis naar
de Filipijnen is voor Saskia het huisbezoek. In de Filipijnen weten
ze echt wat klein wonen is. In piepkleine huisjes leven soms wel 3
gezinnen samen. Wat het meeste is opgevallen is hoe hecht & warm
de gezinnen zijn. Saskia heeft een tas met kleertjes meegenomen voor
de gezinnen die ze bezocht. Als ze later ziet hoe de kinderen heel
trots deze kleren dragen is ze echt ontroerd. 20 mei reist ze weer
terug, na een week die omgevlogen is.
Save
the Children doet echt fantastisch werk! Wat is het fijn om voor een
bedrijf als IKEA te werken. De donatie's van de IKEA foundation maken
echt verschil: een beter bestaan voor kinderen met een beperking en
