¡Basque Beauty: Bilbao!

Last January I stayed for just a day in my favourite city in North Spain: Bilbao. Bilbao is A real must visit, not only for the Guggenheim museum and Philippe Starck's Alhóndiga, but also for the delicious Pintxos and some good shopping. I love the beautiful city where concept stores pop up. Secret of the city is the delicious restaurant in the Guggenheim museum, where you should taste a menu degustación, sip a beer in café Iruna or buy some good food at the Mercado de Ribeira. If you want some more tips about Bilbao, be sure to visit Bijzonder Bilbao, where you can find lots of tips and must visits in this inspiring city.

And of course it is always good to find a great place in the city centre... So how happy I was to find this beautiful apartment at AirBnB in the hart of Bilbao at the plaza Santiago. I love the mix of authentic details like the doors, mixed with Scandinavian design. Would be great to stay here during my next visit and feel like living in Spain!

In januari was ik een dagje in mijn favoriete stad in Noord Spanje: Bijzonder Bilbao. Bilbao is een echte must visit, niet alleen vanwege het Guggenheim museum of Philippe Starcks Alhóndiga, maar ook vanwege de heerlijke pintxos en lekker shoppen. Ik ben dol op deze mooie oude stad, waar het een walhalla van pop-up conceptstores in van de stad is het sterren restaurant van het Guggenheim museum waar het een aanrader is om van een zeer betaalbaar menu degustación te genieten, een biertje te drinken in café Iruna of heerlijk eten te kopen ook de Mercado de Ribeira. Mocht je geïnspireerd zijn door mijn enthousiasme over Bilbao, neem dan zeker een kijkje op de Bijzonder Bilbao site waar je nog veel meer tips voor must visits in deze leuke stad kunt vinden. En natuurlijk is dan altijd de vraag waar je het beste kunt verblijven in de stad.... Dus wat ws ik blij om deze stijlvolle AirBnB te vinden aan het plaza Santiago, in hartje Bilbao. Dit appartement is ingericht met een prachtige mix van oude details zoals de deuren en modern Scandinavisch design. Het lijkt me geweldig om hier te verblijven bij mijn volgende bezoek aan Bilbao en te ergeren hoe het is om te wonen in Spanje!

The house of Mikel Larrinaga in Bilbao.

When Anneke asked me to contribute to her blog, the first thing I thougt that Ia am very happy about it because it is a blog that I like very much and that I follow frequently, and the second thing I thought: where should I write about? It has toe be something that represents my love for interior decoration, and which represents my blog, Etxekodeco and its style, but it should also be an open door to the Bilbao decoration style: the city where I live. And so it is very easy to write a blog about my favorite stylist: Mikel Larrinaga.

It is about his house in Bilbao, in the oldest part of the city. He has a loft with two levels: at the ground floor the kitchen, dining room, living room and a bathroom; at the upper floor a sleeping room with little study and another bathroom. Mikel Larrinaga was responsible for the whole project: from the rebuilding of the house and the styling.

His house is a perfect representation of the style from Mikel: respect for the original architectural elements (as if possible), the use of furniture from different times and styles, which results in a very personal, eclectic style and above all the art works, which are always in the projects of Mikel Larrinaga.

Cuando Anneke me pidió una colaboración para su blog, lo primero que hice fue alegrarme porque es un blog que me gusta mucho y que sigo regularmente, y después comenzar a pensar sobre lo que podía escribir. Tenía que ser algo que me representara a mí como amante de la decoración, que representara a mi blog, Etxekodeco y su estilo, pero también que fuera una ventana abierta a la decoración que se hace en Bilbao, la ciudad en la que vivo. Así que lo más fácil era hacer un post sobre mi interiorista preferido: Mikel Larrinaga. Y esta es su casa de Bilbao, en la parte antigua de la ciudad. Se trata de una vivienda de dos alturas: en la planta baja la cocina, el comedor, el salón y un baño; en la planta superior, un dormitorio con un pequeño escritorio y otro baño. Mikel Larrinaga ha sido el encargado de todo el proyecto de reforma de la casa y también de la decoración. Su casa representa perfectamente la forma de trabajar de Mikel: respeto por los elementos arquitectónicos originales (siempre que sea posible), uso de mobiliario de diferentes épocas y estilos, con lo que consigue un estilo ecléctico muy personal, y sobre todo la inclusión de obras de arte, algo que no falta nunca en los proyectos de Mikel Larrinaga.

Misschien is het niet de eerste stad die in je gedachten opkomt als je naar Spanje wil, maar sinds een paar jaar is Bilbao in opkomst.
Niet alleen vanwege het Guggenheim museum, overal in de stad vind je steeds meer design en mooie architectuur.
Zo werd ik verleden jaar helemaal verrast door het Alhóndiga!

Vroeger een enorm wijnpakhuis, nu door Phillippe Starck omgetoverd tot een cultureel centrum met bars, bibliotheken, sportschool, zwembad, theaterzaal en geweldige architectuur.

Ontbijten kan in de verschillende bars of op het dakterras.

Of haal een broodje (of churros) en eet deze op 1 van de mooie terrasjes op.

Het meest opvallend in het Alhóndiga zijn de 43 columnas. In het informatiebureau kun je folders over het ontwerp van deze mooie kolommen krijgen.

Ook leuk: er zit een geweldige design winkel in het Alhóndiga met mooie kunstboeken en hip design.

Maybe it is not the first city to think of if you go to Spain, but Bilbao is getting more and more popular. Not only because of the Guggenheim museum, everywhere in the city you can find nice architecture and hip design. Last year I was surprised by the lovely Alhóndiga! Formerly a huge winery, now it is a cultural centre, redesigned by Phillipe Starck, with bars, gym, swimming pool, theater and a lovely architecture. You can have breakfast at the bars or at the rooftop terrace. Or bring your own sandwich (or churros) and eat them at one of the lovely terraces outside the building. If you visit the Alhóndiga, don't forget to look at the original columnas. In the visitorscentre you can get lots of information about them. Also nice: there is an inspiring design store in the Alhóndiga where you can buy lovely books and hip design. ¡Enjoy!
