¡Comfort Food: Vermuteria Carmelitas Tapas Barcelona!

UIf the sun is shining and the days are getting longer, I am dreaming of traveling....

When I visited Barcelona a year ago, I saw a lot of bars where you could drink vermouth. How can this old fashioned drink, which my aunts used to like in the seventies, be so popular? I didn’t taste it that time, but when I went back last August, drinking vermouth was on my To-Do list! 

The place to be for a good vermouth is CarmelitasTapas Raval. Housed in a former convent, you can enjoy several vermouth’s in the beautiful restaurant or at a terrace under the shade of a great tree to watch the street-life at the Raval neighborhood. Since I had good lunch, I skipped the delicious food and tapas, but I am sure I will be back to have a Carmelitas vermouth (still can't find this brand in the Netherlands...) and a delicious dinner or tapas at the beautiful decorated bistro.

Wanneer de zon weer gaat schijnen en de dagen langer worden, heb ik zin om op vakantie te gaan. Toen ik een verleden jaar in Barcelona was, zag ik heel veel bars waar vermout op de drankkaart stond. Hoe kan zo'n ouderwets drankje, dat mijn tantes in de jaren zeventig graag dronken, zo populair zijn? Ik heb het toen niet geproefd, maar toen ik in Augustus weer in Barcelona was, stond het hoog op mijn To-Do lijstje! De plek om een lekker glas vermout the drinken is CarmelitasTapas Raval. Deze vermuteria is gevestigd in een oud klooster, waar je verschillende soorten vermout kunt proeven in het stijlvolle restaurant of buiten op het terras, onder een grote boom in de schaduw waar je het straatleven van Raval aan je voorbij ziet gaan. Omdat ik die dag al uitgebreid geluncht had, sloeg ik de heerlijke tapas over, maar ik weet zeker dat ik de volgende keer wanneer ik in Barcelona ben, terugga om van een heerlijke Carmelitas vermout (helaas kan ik dit merk in Nederland niet vinden) en een lekker diner of tapas in de sfeervolle bistro te genieten.

If you think of Still Lifes, you think of paintings by old masters from the Golden Century. So I have to put a picture of a Still Life, inspired by Vermeer. Love this pictures where you can wonder whether it is a painting or a nice form of photography. How I like beautiful almost faded colors. This Still Life inspires me to cook a nice meal, because that's what makes a real Still Life Sunday to me.

Wanneer je aan Stillevens denkt, dan zijn het vaak prachtige schilderijen, gemaakt door de schilders uit de Gouden Eeuw. Dus tijd voor een foto van een stilleven, geïnspireerd door Vermeer. Hello dear readers of ¡Muy Bien! While Anneke is enjoying her holidays in Spain, I (Marij from My Attic blog) write you today's blogpost. At Pinterest I find a lot of beautiful Food inspiration, it's almost becoming an addiction! How I would like to try them all, but where do you find time for that? Then dreaming away with all those lovely pictures... At this moment I get very happy from all the pictures of fresh Summer Icecram. So I like to share a few of my favourites. COFFEE IN THE SUN

Koffie is hip, en dat is al een aantal jaren aan de gang. De koffietentjes schieten nog steeds als paddenstoelen uit de grond, de een nog leuker dan de ander. Hipsters met baarden toveren allerlei ingewikkelde espresso koffie’s (latte, espresso macchiato, flat white met of zonder extra shot en ga zo maar door) in je hippe koffie kopje. Maar nu is de Slow Coffee ook alweer een tijdje terug (net als de elpee komt alles weer terug, en om het woord nog maar eens te gebruiken; deze is überhip. Eigenlijk gewoon koffie zoals vroeger, opgeschonken door een filter op een fornuis, maar dan met eigentijdse accessoires en gewoon op je aanrecht.

Mijn lief, koffie liefhebber pur sang, wilde ook weer aan de slow koffie. Alle attributen gekocht tot aan speciale filters, thermometer en koffiebonen inclusief handmolen aan toe.

In de praktijk gebruiken we de espresso machine vaker, want toch lekkerder, vind ik (Mirjam van Coffee in the Sun blog). Mijn lief zegt dat je het een niet met het ander kunt vergelijken en misschien heeft hij ook wel gelijk. Mits je goede bonen haalt bij een speciaalzaak en ze persoonlijk voor elke pot koffie maalt, zijn er veel heerlijke smaken te ontdekken in de slow coffee. Die ik dan bij voorkeur drink in de zon, zoals de naam van mij blog) met een mooi tijdschrift.

En daarnaast, maar voor mij ook niet onbelangrijk, staat een en ander zeer decoratief in je interieur.

Fijne Dag!

For a few years now, coffee turned out to be very hip. Everywhere around there are still coming lots of new Coffee spots, one even better than the other. Hipsters with beards make all kind of advanced espressos (latte, espresso, macchiato, flat white with or without an extra shot of coffee and may more) in you hip coffee mug. But now the Slow Coffee has got a revival ( just like an LP everything turnes) en to use the word another time: this one is überhip. It really is just normal coffee, like in the older days, coffee brew with boiled hot water at your stove. My love, a real coffee lover, also wanted the Slow Coffee. So we bought all the stuff like special filers, a thermometer, coffee beans and a grinder. Normally we use the espresso machine more often, beach use I ( Mirjam of Coffee in the Sun blog) think it's more tasty. But my love says that you can't compare one and the other, and he might be right. But you have to have good beans, bought at a special coffee-roasting shop and grind them for every cup. Then you find a lot of good tasting Slow Coffees. Like the name of my blog, I prefer to drink them in the sun, reading an inspiring magazine. And next to that, all the beautiful Slow Coffee items look very nice at your kitchen. Have a nice day!

¡Places to be: Shelter 7 in Gent!

Op zoek naar een leuke plek voor een weekendje Gent kwam ik dit minimalistische design pareltje tegen: Shelter 7! Shelter 7 is een appartement met drie etages in het historische centrum van Gent. Dit appartement straalt rust en huiselijkheid uit in het creatieve, beweeglijke Gent. Het huis is stijlvol ingericht met veel vintage en hedendaags design.

Naast een heerlijke plek om te logeren, wordt Shelter 7 ook gebruikt als galerie, fotoshootlocatie, vergaderruimte of zelfs pop-up shop. Op de eerste etage vind je een gezellige huiskamer met open haard en kleine keuken. Op de tweede etage is de prachtige betonnen badkamer met een prachtig uitzicht over Gent. Het dakterras is op de deze etage waar je zomers heerlijk kunt eten. Verliefd op wat je ziet? Alle designstukken zijn ook te koop.

Mijn plannen voor Gent zijn nog even uitgesteld, maar ik verheug me nu al op deze mooie plek!

Looking for a nice place to stay in Gent, I found this minimalistic design apartment: Shelter 7! Shelter 7 is an apartment with three floors in the historical centre of Gent. this apartment resembles quietness and gives you a cozy "at home" feeling, in the always creative and busy Gent. The appartment is tastefully decorated with beautiful vintage and nowadays design. Next to a great place to stay, Shelter 7 is used as a gallery, fotoshoot location, meeting room or even a pop-up store. At the fist flow you'll find a cozy living room with fire place and a small kitchen. At the second floor you find a lovely concrete bathroom with a great view over Gent. The rooftop terrace is at the third floor. Here you can eat at a sunny summer evening. In love with the beauty you see? Every piece of design is for sale. I have delayed my plans for a weekend in Gent, but I am looking forward to stay in this beautiful plece!

This is Rocio Jimenez from Casa Haus and I am very excited to be guest blogging while my dearAnneke is on vacation. I am a Mexican designer and interior stylist, and a huge DIY lover (actually, I am a crafter for Deco Hogar, a Latinamerican TV show you can watch here and a one of Little*HausMagazine's founders and editors).

I love this time of year because it's the beginning of the holiday season, starting with one of Mexico's largest celebrations: Day of Dead. This fun and colorful festivity is widely celebrated accross the country on November 2nd, with altars lovingly displayed to remember those gone in a joyful way. Day of Dead is actually becoming very popular and trendy, so today I'm going to show you how to make sugar skulls, a traditional favor you can use to decorate this time of year.

This is a very easy recipe with simple ingredients and no need for molds, and I love how pretty they turn out. Also, this is a very fun activity to make with kids.

I was able to make 3 non-hollow skulls out of these ingredients.

To make the skulls, mix the egg white, corn syrup, a few drops of vanilla and a few drops of lime with a fork in a bowl. Then sift the powdered sugar on the mix. Incorporate with a wooden spoon, and then use your fingers to form a rather dry ball. The key is to feel the dough a little dry, because if it’s very malleable you’ll shape it nicely, but the figure will deform as it dries. Divide the dough in three.

To make the figures, keep working the dough with your hands. If you feel it is very dry, try adding a few drops of lime. Don’t add to many drops, just the ones you need to shape it into a ball. Using the tips of your fingers make the “eyes”, use the tip of your paintbrush to make the “nose”, and then use a fork for the teeth. If you want to shape the dough on a board, dust it with cornstarch first.

Let them dry for at least 3 hours before painting them. I used gel food coloring, which worked just as paint with the fine paintbrush, then dusted colored sugar on a few spots while the gel was still wet.

Let it dry again for a few hours, and enjoy using them for your altar, or as treats for friends and family this Halloween season :)

¡Djemaa el Fna in Rotterdam!

Een plein vol slangenbezweerders, verhalenvertellers, henna schilderessen, karretjes met vers geperst sinaasappelsap maar vooral veel eettentjes vol heerlijkheden, echt een sprookje uit 1001 nacht: dat is het beroemde Djemaa el Fna plein in Marrakech.

Dit weekend van 8 augustus t/m 10 augustus 2014 is het eetplein Djemaa el Fna voor de tweede keer te vinden in het Rotterdamse Museumpark. Net als het origineel een gezellige markt waar alle Marokkaanse geuren je tegemoet komen. Geniet van de Marokkaanse sfeer onder de Rotterdamse sterrenhemel en proef van de Rotterdamse eetculturen. Daarnaast ook veel Marokkaanse muziek en andere activiteiten.

Nu maar hopen dat de zon dit weekend zich laat zien voor het ultieme vakantiegevoel! (Maar ook met een grijze wolkenhemel een must visit!)

EetpleinDjemaa el Fna

A square full of snake-charmers, storytellers, henna painters, trolleys filled with fresh orange juice but above all lots of delicious food, a real fairytale from 1001 nights: that's the famous Djemaa el Fna square in Marrakech. This weekend August 8^th until August 10^th 2014 the food square Djemaa el Fna can be found in Rotterdam for the second time. Just like the original, is is a cozy market with the delicious smell of lots of Moroccan foods. Enjoy the Moroccan atmosphere underneath the Rotterdam starry sky and enjoy the Moroccan food culture. Next to that there is a lot of Moroccan music and other activities. I hope that the sun will show up this weekend, for an ultimate holiday feeling! (But even with a cloudy sky a must visit!)
