If you like design and are so lucky to live in The Hague, it’s great to enjoy our annual Festival Designkwartier in June. For five years this festival is organised and every year I get surprised by nice and inspiring designers, who show their collections in beautiful locations at the Zeeheldenkwartier.

This year, the first visit turned out to be the best, because I visited the charming Anna Surie with her beautiful wallpaper & cushions of The Eye of the Beholder collection. Bright and shiny colours with elegant flowers combined with... waste. With this collection, Anna wants to show is that how beautiful nature is, there is always a threat of us leaving our garbage. Combined with beautiful wallpaper with flowers or plastic bottles, garage of Anna’s home was a real highlight of the festival to me. Next to that Anna is a very vivid, kind and inspiring women.

I am still thinking which cushion I like best: the pink cushion with flowers and plastic, the green flip-flop with the flowers, the pink fish and plastic or the lilac cushion with the flowers and a fallen pot of paint. How great it would be to have a little piece of this beautiful art at my home...

I am in love....

Als je van design houdt en je woont in Den Haag, dan is het een feestje om van het jaarlijkse Festival Designkwartier te genieten in juni. Dit jaar werd het voor de vijfde keer georganiseerd en ieder jaar word ik wee verrast door leuke en inspirerende ontwerpers die hun collecties op prachtige locaties in het Zeeheldenkwartier laten zien. Dit jaar was mijn eerste bezoek het beste, omdat ik de charmante AnnaSurie bezocht met haar prachtige behang en kussen collectie The Eye of the Beholder. Frisse en felle kleuren met prachtige aquarellen van elegante bloemen gecombineerd met... afval. Anna wil ons laten zien dat hoe mooi de natuur ook is, wij deze steeds bedreigen door os afval te laten slingeren. In combinatie met het behang met bloemen en plastic flessen, was dit echt een hoogtepunt van het festival voor mij. En bovendien is Anna een super levendige, originele en inspirerende dame. Ik kan maar niet kiezen welk kussen ik het mooiste vind: het roze kussen met bloemen en plastic, de groene met flip-flop en bloemen, de roze vis met plastic of de lila mat bloemen en een omgevallen pot verf. Wat zou het leuk zijn zo’n kunstwerkje in huis te hebben.... Als je blij wordt van deze foto’s vergeet dan niet om even in Anna’s shop te kijken. Naast de kussens, kan Anna ook een van haar ontwerpen op je favoriete (jeans) jasje maken, zoals je hier op Instagram kunt zien. Ik ben verliefd....

How happy I am when a new interior shop opens it’s doors!

In a loft filled with beautiful design like MENU and Studio Henk, Fort M in The Hague is a real must vist!

Beautiful styled, with lots of green plants and warm coloured walls, the shop is a great place of inspiration. What I like most is the wall with all kind of materials which can be chosen while buying a new couch or table.. Not a tiny piece of cloth to choose for your couch, but almost a square meter, so you really can see and imagine how your new chair or couch will look. The owners are very kind and tell you all the stories about their shop and furniture. While you are wondering and wandering around and get inspired by the stylish corners of the shop, they make you a cup of coffee,

So if you want to go shopping in The Hague, make sure to visit Fort M!

Ik ben altijd weer blij als er een nieuwe interieur winkel zijn deuren opent! In een loft, gevuld met geweldig design van MENU en StudioHenk, is Fort M echt een aanwinst voor Den Haag. Gewedlig gestyled, vol met groene planten en warm gekleurde muren is deze winkel en acht een bron van inspiratie. Wat ik het leukste vind is dat er een hele muur is met allerlei soorten materialen die je kunt gebruiken om de kleur en materiaal van je ideale bank of tafel te kiezen. Niet een klein stukje stof uit een stalenboek waar je de bekleding voor je nieuwe stoel of bank kunt kiezen, maar bijna een vierkante meter, zodat je echt kunt zien hoe je nieuwe meubel eruit gaat zien. De eigenaren zijn super aardig en nemen alle tijd en moeite om je het verhaal over hun winkel en de ontwerpen te vertellen. Terwijl je door de winkel loopt om van al het moois te genieten, word je ook nog eens verwend met heerlijke koffie. Dus ben je in Den Haag om een dagje te shoppen, sla dan zeker Fort M niet over.

shares her East meets West inspiration!

East meets West

Wow, totally honored! I write my first guest blog for ¡Muy Bien! during Anneke’s vacation. This will also be a practice before my new website goes live. Yes, on the renewed website of YurtCollection (not live yet) I will share my 'eastmeetswest' in design stories. A theme that I am very passionate about and I have even filled an inspirationstore with this theme!

So, design from or inspired by the Silk Road is something I am very passionate about. Partly,because of my roots and partly because my love for beautifully designed interior products.

The reason why these designs are so special for me is that they connect the East and the West. A nice example of this connection is for example the Tulip cups of Turkish designer Mana Yildiz. Delicate porcelain cups in the shape of a tulip. Mana is educated in Eindhoven at the Design Academy and in her designs, you will see the minimalistic forms of Dutch Design, but also the warm colors and inspiration from the East.

Another favorite is designer Hozan Zangana with roots in Iraq. Hozan is inspired by language, tradition and rituals. His objects offer a new life to old heritages.

The down-to-earth Dutch designer Rianne Koens is living and working now for many years in Istanbul, the junction between the East and the West! Rianne is very enthusiastic about the craft still existing in Turkey and her products of her label Otura Design are therefore an exciting crossroad between East and West.

Also favorite is the young label Zanat from Bosnia. The stunning artisan techniques of this Bosnian label is listed on the UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage List to be protected. Zanat teams up with talented designers like Monica Förster and Studioilse to make sure that these ancient techniques fit very well in this time. Ancient Eastern craftmanship blended with minimalistic Western design. Mixing East and West, past and present, craft and design makes these furniture truly unique.

The nomads in Central Asia live in yurts, which means ‘home’. The name of our inspirationstore, YurtStore, in the dynamic district Zeeheldenkwartier in The Hague, was inspired by this. YurtStore is a home for young designers from the Silk Road, a place where contemporary design of young designers from the Silk Road come together. We think meeting each other inspires and stimulates people.

East meets West

Geen dag zonder de Inspiratie van Instagram! Terwijl ik van mijn vakantie aan het genieten ben, deelt mijn lieve bijzondere IG vriendin Güler (@YurtCollection), eigenaar van de prachtige Yurt Store in Den Haag, haar East meets West inspiratie!

Wauw, helemaal vereerd! Ik mag mijn eerste gastblog schrijven voor ¡Muy Bien! tijdens de vakantie van Anneke. Kan ik alvast oefenen voor als mijn nieuwe website life gaat. Jawel, op de vernieuwde website van YurtCollection ga ik mijn ‘eastmeetswest’ in design verhalen delen. Een thema waar ik heel erg gepassioneerd over ben en daarom zelfs een hele inspirationstore heb gevuld met dit thema!

Design uit of geïnspireerd door de Zijderoute is dus iets waar ik erg gepassioneerd over ben. Deels komt dit natuurlijk door mijn roots en deels door mijn voorliefde voor mooi vormgegeven interieur producten.

Wat deze designs voor mij zo bijzonder maakt is dat ze het Oosten en het Westen verbinden. Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan zijn bijvoorbeeld de Tulip cups van de Turkse ontwerpster Mana Yildiz. Delicate porseleinen kopjes in de vorm van een tulp. Mana is opgeleid in Eindhoven aan de Design Academie en in haar ontwerpen zie je heel duidelijk het minimalistische vormen van Dutch Design, maar ook de warme kleuren en inspiratie uit het Oosten.

Een andere favoriete ontwerper is Hozan Zangana met roots in Irak. Hozan is geïnspireerd door taal, tradities en rituelen en zijn objecten bieden een nieuw leven aan oud erfgoed.

De down-to-earth Nederlandse Rianne Koens woont en werkt al jaren in Istanbul, hét knooppunt van de oude Zijderoute! Rianne is enthousiast over het ambacht en handwerk dat nog steeds bestaat in Turkije. De producten van haar label Otura Design zijn dan ook een spannende kruising tussen Oost en West.

Als laatste favoriet wil ik het jonge label Zanat uit Bosnie noemen. De indrukwekkende ambachtelijke houtsnijtechnieken van dit Bosnische label zijn opgenomen in de UNESCO Wereld Erfgoed Lijst. En om te zorgen dat deze eeuwenoude technieken hedendaags toegepast worden, werkt Zanat met getalenteerde ontwerpers zoals Monica Förster en Studioilse. Oud Oosterse vakmanschap in combinatie met minimalistisch Westerse design en het mengen van oost en west, ambacht en design, verleden en heden maken deze ontwerpen echt heel uniek.

De nomaden in Centraal Azie noemen hun tenten yurt, omdat dit ‘thuis’ betekent. Dat is ook de reden waarom ik de inspirationstore, midden in het bruisend hart van het Zeeheldenkwartier in Den Haag, YurtStore heb genoemd. Een thuis voor deze jonge getalenteerde ontwerpers, een plek waar hedendaags design uit of geïnspireerd door de Zijderoute samenkomt. Een plek vol nieuwe ontmoetingen en verhalen.

If you visit The Hague for a shopping day, it isn't a well known spot, but you surely should visit the Quartier Latin of The Hague and take a look at all the inspiring shops at the Weimarstraat. Since I live in this neighbourhood for years, I am always happy when I discover a new shop. I really had to stop and place my nose against the window, when I discovered the beautiful Sprinkel + Hop store! Joke created a vintage Walhalla, just what we missed in this neighbourhood.

A lot of brass, rattan, colored glass and ceramic, everything is handled with care and placed in the beautiful white store. Every time you visit the shop, you will Discover some new treasures. And how great it is that you will enjoy a new eyecatcher for your home, which just gets a second life instead of all the new...

Het ligt niet meteen op de route voor een dagje winkelen in Den Haag, maar wat is het leuk om je te laten verrassen in het Quartier Latin van Den Haag en een kijkje te nemen in de inspirerende winkels in de Weimarstraat. Ik woon al jaren in deze wijk en ben altijd weer blij als een nieuwe winkel zijn deuren opent. Ik ben meteen van mijn fiets afgestapt en heb m'n neus tegen de winkelruit geduwd, toen ik Sprinkel + Hop ontdekte! Joke creëerde een echt vintage walhalla, precies zo'n winkel misten we nog in deze buurt. Veel messing, rotan, gekleurd glas en keramiek, alles is met zorg uitgezocht en krijgt een prachtige plek in deze stralend witte winkel. Iedere keer dat je de winkel bezoekt, zijn er nieuwe schatten te ontdekken. En hoe leuk is het dat je nieuw gevonden eyecatcher een tweede leven krijgt, in plaats van weer steeds weer nieuwe spullen te kopen. Sprinkel + Hop opent zijn deuren op donderdag, vrijdag en zaterdag en als je op een ander moment wil winkelen, neem dan contact op met Joke of neem een kijkje in de mooie webshop!

¡Shops to inspire: Design Mind in Den Haag!

Last time I visited the Noordeinde to do some shopping, I was surprised by a lot of fantastic new concept stores. The one which inspired me most is the beautiful Design Mind concept store. At Design Mind you can find a beautiful collection of Nordic design from Latvian designers, living in the Netherlands. All products are made of pure, ecological materials, which are a great combination with the minimalistic design. Next to that i's great to see how the minimalistic Nordic design matches with the authentic details of the shop. So if you go for a shopping tour in The Hague, be sure to visit Design Mind!

Toen ik laatst over het Noordeinde fietsen was ik verrast door een flink aantal nieuwe, inspirerende conceptstores die daar hun deuren geopend hebben. De winkel die me het meest verraste is de mooie Design Mind conceptstore. Bij Design Mind vind je een geweldig mooie collectie Nordic design van Letse ontwerpers die in Nederland wonen. Alle producten zijn gemaakt van pure ecologische materialen, die een geweldige combinatie vormen met het minimalistische design. Deze mooie ontwerpen komen in het pand met alle authentieke details geweldig tot hun recht, dus als je een dagje gaat shoppen in Den Haag, zorg ervoor dat je even bij Design Mind gaat kijken. 

¡Shops to inspire: Dutch en Route in Den Haag!

Cycling through the inspiring Regentessekwartier in The Hague, I discovered a new Concept store: Dutch en Route! The shop with beautiful plaster decorated ceilings and a lovely green city garden, is full of inspiring goods. But the best is that's owners Veerle and Nitha filled the shop with sustainable designs and that they will be a Social Enterprise as well.

At the back of the shop, there's a large table with sewing machines waiting for the crafts atelier, where some refugees who are master tailors, who will start from September to make clothes and more which Veerle designs.

Next to clothes , Nitha collects lots of vintage interior items, but also designs her own lamps etc. wich are made at non- profit organizations, to give their inhabitants meaningfull daily activities . Next to their design they have designs and jewellery from other sustainable designers. In the weekends you can pass by at Dutch en Route to buy delicious organic bread. And when they have time, they will make you a good cup of coffee, telling you stories about all the designs, while you are strolling around the shop, discovering new items.

Fietsend door het mooie Regentessekwartier in Den Haag, ontdekte ik vlakbij mijn huis een nieuwe conceptstore: Dutch en Route! In een mooi oud pand, met prachtige plafonds met gipsen ornamenten en een mooie groene stadstuin, is een winkel vol met inspirerende spullen. Maar het leukste is dat de eigenaren Veerle en Nitha besloten hebben er een echte Social Enterprise van te maken. Aan de achterkant van de winkel wacht namelijk een grote tafel met naaimachines te wachten op de vluchtelingen die meesterkleermakers zijn en vanaf september aan de slag gaan om de kleding en ander ontwerpen van Veerle te gaan maken. Naast de ambachtelijk gemaakte kleding, verzamelt Nitha vintage interieur goodies, maar ontwerpt ook haar eigen lampen etc. die gemaakt worden bij non- profit organisaties om hun bewoners een zinvolle dagbesteding te geven. Daarnaast is er plek in de winkel voor veel duurzame ontwerpers van o.a. sieraden. En in hete wekend kun je bij Dutch en Route terecht voor Lekker biologisch brood. En mochten Veerle en Nitha tijd hebben, dan maken ze graag een kop koffie terwijl ze je de verhalen vertellen over alle ontwerpen en jij lekker kunt snuffelen in deze inspirerende winkel, waar je steeds weer iets nieuws ontdekt.
